Porch Safety: Should You Leave the Lights On?

December 18, 2020

[Porch Lighting Strategy]

It seems like a no-brainer to leave the lights on outside your home to deter burglars while you’re away. But does that really work, or is it just a waste of electricity?

When to Keep Your Lights On

  • When you’re home (and awake): It allows you to see anyone approaching.
  • When you go out at night: Facilitates safer entry to your home.
  • Combine lighting: Use a mix of porch, garage, and interior lights to simulate activity.

When to Keep Your Lights Off

  • During daylight: A light left on all day is a sign of an empty house.
  • While on vacation: Consistent lights for days signal vacancy.
  • When sleeping: Most residential crime occurs during the day.

An Even Better Option: Automate

Automate your lighting to turn on/off at varying times. Motion-sensing lights are also an affordable, effective deterrent.
