4 Ways to Lower Your Skin Cancer Risk

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. When you’re smart about sun protection and know common skin cancer “red flags,” you’ll be able to enjoy the great outdoors worry-free this season.
1. Start with Sunblock
Sunblock isn’t only for beach outings – it’s an excellent first line of defense. Use an SPF of at least 30, shielding against both UVA and UVB rays. Reapply every 20 minutes if swimming or sweating.
2. Layer Up
Be selective with your sun exposure. Use long sleeves, opaque fabrics, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Invest in a UV-rated umbrella for added protection.
3. Avoid Sunbathing and Artificial Exposure
Purposely sunbathing or using tanning beds increases skin cancer risk and leads to premature aging. The damage isn't just cosmetic; it is a permanent health concern.
4. Know How to Check Your Own Skin
Stay familiar with existing marks on your skin. If a mark grows, changes shape, or becomes asymmetrical, consult a dermatologist immediately. Early detection is key.
