Wildlife Safety & Awareness
About 2 million times every year, animals and cars collide on U.S. roadways — often causing serious and even fatal injuries to drivers and passengers, along with about $1 billion in damage.
Avoiding wildlife
- Be especially careful at dusk and dawn: Active times for animals; headlights can blind them.
- Watch for signs: Warning signs are posted for a reason; heed them.
- Expect more than one: If you see one animal, others are likely nearby.
- Stay calm: Avoid erratic swerving; focus on controlled braking.
After an accident
- Call 911: Report injuries and traffic hazards.
- Do not touch the animal: Keep your distance for your safety.
- Document the damage: Take photos and file a police report for insurance.
- Contact your agent: Claims are typically covered under comprehensive coverage.
