Driving Habits That Are Bad for Your Car
July 5, 2021
Think you’re a good driver? No matter how safe you are behind the wheel, you’ve probably done things like shifting into drive while the car is still rolling backward, riding the brakes on steep hills, or rolling into the gas station on empty.
If so, you may not have even realized you were doing everything wrong. But these habits could be costing you significant repair bills. Here are seven driving habits to avoid:
- Running on empty: This puts excessive stress on your fuel pump. Keep your tank at least a quarter full.
- Shifting too soon: Avoid shifting into drive while still rolling in reverse to protect your transmission.
- Braking too much: Use lower gears on steep hills instead of riding the brakes to save your rotors.
- Gunning it: Rapid acceleration from a cold start causes premature engine and tire wear.
- Forgetting the parking brake: Always engage the parking brake to take the load off the transmission's parking pawl.
- Packing on the pounds: Unnecessary weight in your vehicle strains your suspension and decreases fuel efficiency.
- Holding down the clutch: For manual drivers, keep the car in neutral at stoplights to avoid wearing out the clutch throw-out bearing.
